DIY Ceiling Beam Makeover Using General Finishes Gel Stain

The original beams in this coastal gem had that dated yellowy-oak finish— when we walked in we instantly saw the potential.
The transformation is unreal. With a little elbow grease (and some kinked necks) the beams are now rich, warm, and full of texture and the first thing you notice when you walk in.
Step-by-Step: How to Stain Faux Beams with Gel Stain
Materials:
General Finishes Gel Stain – Java Rich, deep color with great wood grain enhancement
Painter’s Tape Protects your ceiling and edges from drips
Clean, Lint-Free Rags For wipe-on application and touch-ups
Small Foam Brush Great for precision work in corners and edges
Plastic Gloves Gel stain is sticky—save your hands the trouble
Wood Putty for filling knots/imperfections
220-Grit Sandpaper to scuff up surface
Drop Cloth or Plastic Sheeting to protect floors and furniture
How to Guide:
1. Clean the Beams
Wipe the beams thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. A clean surface helps the stain adhere evenly.
2. Fill Deep Knots or Gaps
Use wood putty to patch any noticeable knots or imperfections. Let it dry completely before sanding.
3. Light Sanding
A quick scuff-sand helps smooth the surface and gives the stain something to grip. We used 220-grit for this.
4. Tape the Ceiling (Don’t Skip This!)
Staining is messy —especially overhead. We carefully taped the ceiling edges to protect our white paint and keep a crisp line.
Pro tip: Lars became the taping master during this part, and it seriously saved us cleanup time! Take your time taping.
5. Apply the First Coat (Wipe-On)
Using a clean rag and GLOVES!, we wiped on the first coat of Java gel stain. This technique gives a softer, more natural look that lets the wood grain shine. We used the foam brush approach on our stairs (link), that was our first time using Gel stain and we now only use the wiping method.
6. Apply a Light Second Coat (Next Day)
Target any lighter areas to even out the tone. We didn’t fully re-stain—just built up color where needed.
7. Touch Up and Ceiling Cleanup
Once dry, we did final touch-ups and used a small brush to fix any bleed-over onto the ceiling.
