Kitchen Upgrade: Cabinet Hardware Is a High-Impact, Low-Cost DIY Project

Adding or updating cabinet hardware is one of the most impactful and affordable DIY projects you can do. While it may seem simple—drill some holes and attach the pulls—getting it right is key. If the holes aren’t perfectly aligned, it can quickly turn into an eyesore.

Over the years, we’ve used different methods to install hardware and have found out that not all methods are created equal! Here’s what we’ve learned:

Cabinet Hardware Selection

For this project, we went with 7.5-inch brushed nickel pulls from Amazon. Initially, I ordered 5-inch pulls, but they didn’t give the grand look we wanted. Thanks to Amazon Prime, I quickly ordered 6 1/4-inch and 7-inch sizes. We both loved the larger scale, which felt bold but balanced. These sturdy, sleek pulls are highly recommended. I have used these  cabinet pulls from Amazon in our first house and I was constantly catching on my pockets on the sides – very annoying! So I knew I wanted something sleek and snag-free. These pulls were perfect!

Methods for Installing Hardware

  1. Custom Jig: Lars made a custom jig from scrap 1x material, but it was time-consuming and required clamping. It worked, but we recommend a pre-made jig instead.
  2. Plastic Jig: A budget-friendly solution for smaller pulls, this lightweight jig is easy to use and gets the job done. There is this affordable plastic jig or this jig for slightly longer pulls, both on Amazon.
  3. Stainless Adjustable Jig: For larger pulls, this aluminum jig from Amazon provides the precision you need and is well worth the small investment.

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Cabinet Hardware

  1. Decide Placement:
    Browse Pinterest for inspiration, and carefully measure the placement.
  2. Set the Jig:
    Secure the jig in place and double-check alignment before drilling.
  3. Use a Good Drill Bit:
    Invest in a sharp, high-quality drill bit for clean holes.
  4. Drill the Drawers First:
    Do all the drawers first, then move on to the vertical cabinets.
  5. Adjust the Jig:
    Adjust the jig for vertical cabinets and drill holes for your pulls.
  6. Optional – Tape for Blowouts: For extra protection, use painter’s tape on both sides of the cabinet to avoid splintering.
