Calacatta Quartz Countertops: Luxury That Lasts
When choosing a countertop, we wanted something that combined elegance with durability. We opted for a White Calacatta Quartz, a high-end material that mimics marble with striking veins and a soft white background. Unlike marble, quartz is low-maintenance, scratch-resistant, and doesn’t require sealing—perfect for a busy kitchen where both beauty and practicality are essential. Not only did it elevate our kitchen’s look, but it also gave us a durable, easy-to-clean surface that will last for years.
Decision Process
Fun fact – we picked our White Calacatta Quartz countertop from Home Depot’s website, without seeing it in person! Talk about a high-stakes decision. And yes, it ended up being the most expensive item in our entire remodel – ~$4,100. Picking the right countertop isn’t an easy decision, and we went through plenty of options before settling on this one.
To narrow it down, we focused on two key factors: cost and color.
- Color: We were looking for something that would keep the kitchen light and bright = white. We were drawn to Calacatta Quartz because of its heavy veining and luxurious look.
- Cost: We stayed to under $80/ sq. ft. Pros of Home Depot Countertops: You only pay for what you use. Their price is by sq. ft so you don’t have to buy the full slab and + labor.
Selection: Calacatta Idillio by Stonework Quartz
For our countertops, we chose Quartz Countertop in Calacatta Idillio by Stonework, available through Home Depot. This material offers the elegant look of marble, with striking veins and soft white tones.
Benefits of Quartz: Why we chose Quartz
- Durability: Quartz is incredibly strong and resistant to chips, cracks, and scratches, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like kitchens. It stands up to daily use without losing its beauty.
- Low Maintenance: Unlike marble, quartz doesn’t need to be sealed. Its non-porous surface resists stains and bacteria, making it easy to wipe down and keep clean with minimal effort.
- Heat and Scratch Resistance: Quartz can withstand high temperatures and is resistant to scratches, so you can cook and work on it without worrying about damaging the surface.
- Consistent Appearance: Unlike natural stones, quartz is engineered to provide a uniform look. The veins and patterns in quartz are replicated in a controlled manner, offering a consistent design from slab to slab.
- Variety of Styles: Quartz is available in a wide range of colors and patterns, making it easy to find the perfect match for any style. Whether you’re looking for a solid color, subtle patterns, or dramatic veining, there’s a quartz countertop that suits your design vision.
White Quartz: What to consider
- Snowy Ibiza – low cost (group A) with a very subtle design. Too subtle and ‘cloudy’ for what we were looking for.
- Carrara Bianco – veining still subtle, and veins darker and more defined than snowy Ibiza.
- Bianco Calacatta – strong veining, but we were concerned that veining was too widely spread out and white may be too stark for our space.
Final Thoughts: Countertop Journey
Choosing the right countertop can be intimidating. At the start of our remodel, we considered several different materials: laminate, butcher block, custom concrete, soapstone, granite and quartz. While other options have their own charm, we ultimately chose quartz for its low-maintenance and long-lasting properties.
Choosing from a small image on Home Depot’s website was a little risky but in the end, it was worth taking that risk. We love the final product – the kitchen now feels like a sophisticated, welcoming space.
